20 Best Hairstyles for Black Girls to Rock Any Occasion

1. Double Buns

Double buns are a classic hairstyle that highlights the natural beauty of black hair.  They involve parting the hair in half or multiple sections with a rat tail comb and gathering the hair into two or more buns.  You could always leave the base of your hair in its puffy state.

If you prefer a more slick look, grab your favorite leave-in conditioner, spray bottle, bristle brush, and gel.  As a result, it creates a playful, more polished look perfect for everyday wear or special occasions.

2. Box Braids

Box braids are a timeless protective style because it never goes out of fashion.  They involve parting the hair into small, square-shaped sections and braiding them from the roots to the ends.  Box braids offer versatility. For instance, they can be styled in various lengths, thicknesses, and colors.

I LOVE box braids! Especially during those sweltering summer months.  Box braids can of course be worn all year around.  I’m about ready to head to the nearest braiding salon right neowww! 😂

3. Cornrows

Cornrow braids have been around for centuries – believed to have originated in sub-Saharan Africa.  I have worn cornrows since I was a little 90s kid.  They involve braiding the hair close to the scalp in straight lines or intricate patterns.

Moreover, cornrows can be worn in a variety of styles; from simple and neat to elaborate and artistic.

4. Bantu Knots

Bantu Knots are a stylish and versatile hairstyle.  They are created by twisting sections of hair into small knots, which can be worn as is or unraveled to create beautiful curls.  Bantu knots are fashionable, promote hair growth, and protect the ends!

5. Twist-Outs

I’ve said this many times, but I’ll say it again🗣️!  Twist-outs are my go-to hairstyle because they give my hair the definition and volume that I love!  Firstly, divide the hair into sections and twist them while wet or moisturized.

Secondly, I always use a twisting cream and have recently incorporated gel when setting my twists.  Lastly, once the twists are dry, they can be unraveled to reveal bouncy and well-defined curls.

6. High Bun

The high bun is a sleek and elegant hairstyle that works well for both casual and formal occasions.  It involves gathering all the hair into a bun positioned at the top of the head.  I use a bun holder when I am going for a neat look.

Adorn the high bun with accessories or style with braids or curly bangs for added flair.  This is easily a go-to hairstyle for many – especially when you need a quick restyle and aren’t quite ready for wash day!

7. Fulani Braids

Inspired by the Fulani people of West Africa, Fulani braids are a stunning hairstyle that incorporates a center parting with braids on both sides.  They often feature intricate patterns, beads, and cowrie shells, adding a unique cultural touch to the overall look.  I love this look for warmer weather, but feel free to rock them anytime!

8. Faux Locs

Faux locs offer the look of traditional locs without the true commitment.  Achieve this style by weaving synthetic or human hair extensions into your natural hair, creating a temporary protective style.  Crochet or weave the faux locs into the hair individually, but crochet would likely be the preferred method because its faster.

Faux locs come in various lengths and sizes, allowing for endless creativity.

9. Curly Puff with Headscarf

A puff with a headscarf is a stylish way to accessorize while protecting the hair.  It involves creating a puff at the crown of the head and tying a vibrant headscarf around it.  You could also leave hair out in front to style faux curly bangs or a side swoop for extra cuteness.

Personalize this versatile style by choosing different scarf colors and patterns.

10. Halo Braid

The halo braid is a heavenly hairstyle that frames the face beautifully.  It involves braiding the hair around the head, creating a crown-like effect.  Add some braid rings or hair jewels to take the style up a notch!  The halo braid is an elegant choice for formal events or a sophisticated everyday look.

11. Wash and Go

The wash-and-go hairstyle is a favorite among many naturals.  This style highlights the natural curl pattern of a specific texture.  To achieve this look, you’ll need to start with freshly washed hair.

Next, spray the hair with warm water.  Wash-and-gos are set best on wet hair, so keep a spray bottle nearby.  Apply a leave-in conditioner or your favorite moisturizing product, an oil, and gel for optimal results.

A setting foam could be used as well – I have seen people set their wash and go using foam as their only product.  There are various techniques and products that could help you set your wash and go, but one step remains the same.  Once set, allow it to air dry or use a diffuser. This low-maintenance style lets your curls shine in all their glory.

12. Jumbo Braids

Jumbo braids are a bold and statement-making hairstyle.  Worn out or in an updo, jumbo braids offer a striking look that exudes confidence and personality.  Add beads or hair jewels to spruce up the look even more!

13. Side Swept Curls

Side-swept curls are a glamorous option for special occasions or everyday wear.  This style involves sweeping the hair to one side and allowing the curls to lay effortlessly over the shoulder.  Style these curls on freshly washed hair or as a midweek refresh from a previous look.

14. Senegalese Twists

Senegalese twists are similar to box braids, but there is definitely a difference.  Braids take three parts of hair to create them.  Senegalese twists are achieved by twisting two strands of hair together from the roots to the ends.

They are initially three strands braided with added hair at the root in order to stay intact, but down the length of the hair, the strands are joined into two in order to form the twists.  Senegalese twists are highly versatile and can be worn in various lengths, colors, and sizes.

15. Braids with Large Puff

A puff with braids is a chic and sophisticated hairstyle.  It involves braiding the base of your hair and securing your puff into a ponytail.  The puff could be your own hair or a large puff drawstring ponytail extension.

If you prefer your own hair, secure it with a puff band.  This band will create more volume and less tension on the edges and scalp!

16. Goddess Braids

Goddess braids are large and intricate braids that make a powerful statement.  They involve creating thick, cornrow-like braids styled in an updo or out to display long lengths.  Even a low bun would be a flattering look.

Accessorize Goddess braids with shimmer strings or cuffs for added pizzazz!

17. TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro)

The Teeny Weeny Afro is a bold and liberating hairstyle that celebrates short natural hair.  The TWA is the very first stage of the natural hair journey – right after doing the big chop.  This style reveals the true texture of hair, right from the scalp.

If you love short, defined curls then the teeny weeny afro is a hit!  The TWA is not only stylish, but also promotes healthy hair growth.

18. Half Up, Half Down

The half-up, half-down style offers the best of both worlds.  It involves gathering the hair from the sides or crown of the head and securing it in a ponytail or bun while leaving the rest of the hair flowing freely.  Create the look with loose curls or on blown-out hair.  This style is versatile and suitable for any occasion.

19. Twisted Updo

A twisted updo is an elegant and intricate hairstyle perfect for formal events, weddings, or just running errands.  It involves twisting sections of the hair and securing them in a high ponytail or bun.  This classic look showcases the beauty of black hair while keeping it neat and sophisticated.

Last, but not least…

20. Natural Hair Frohawk

The frohawk is a playful and edgy hairstyle that combines a mohawk-inspired shape with natural curls.  To create the style, part your hair into multiple sections and secure it with bob pins, elastic hair ties, or rubber bands.  If you’re going for great definition, use perm rods to set your curls while keeping the sides sleek or shaved.

Be sure to apply a mousse or curl-defining styler to the hair before putting in the rods.  The frohawk is a bold choice that exudes confidence and individuality.

So there you have it!
