Kinks and curls crew, how’s it going out there? I sincerely hope that you all are doing well and staying safe. There is a lot going on today. Let’s just say that 2020 has been one hell of a year so far..literally. I am a black woman and I must express my concern for our community and support the best way that I can. By support, I mean putting money back into our communities.
Of course this is not to say discontinue the support of other businesses, but I would like to highlight black-owned businesses exclusively and encourage patronizing them. Now this is a hair care blog, so I must stick to the script of focusing on hair related content! I can’t go talking about black owned banks, schools, financial services etc on this platform! So let’s take a look at all the goodies below!
Melanin Haircare
This is a fairly new line that officially hit the market in February 2019. The founder of this amazing line is no other than Whitney White aka Naptural85. I love the multipurpose leave in conditioner, hair and body oil, and the twist elongating cream. Got dry hair? Each product gets the job donnneeee!! Moisture✅ Managability✅ Softness✅ and the ingredients are what??!! – ALL natural!!
Just so y’all know it’s real, here are actual pictures of what I have left of the products! As you can see, I need more leave-in! It smells so good and a little goes a long way!
I’ve purchased the products earlier this year and I’m still putting them to good use. Just take all my coins..and hopefully some of you ringlet readers will come up off the cash and support as well. This is a bomb line so if you have not tried the products and you decide to, tell em that I sent you ?.
Taliah Waajid
This brand delivers! My personal favorite is the Green Apple and Aloe line, but there are 4 collections to choose from. Taliah Waajid even has a line for the kiddies! The ingredients are also natural and chemical free, suited for those that want a healthy hair care regimen without harsh substances. I absolutely love the Apple and Aloe curl definer cream and it smells amazing!! Just like green apples!
Camille Rose Naturals
Another winning brand right here! Camille Rose began in the kitchen of Janell Stephens, founder and CEO, in 2011. Her vision was to create products that were natural and free from harsh chemicals. All products were handmade. This hobby turned into a multi-million dollar business for the mom of 5 in just three years! Talk about dedication and hard work!
Not only are the products amazing, but they are free from those substances that we can barely pronounce. It’s very important to read labels and understand what it is that we are purchasing because lack of knowledge can do a lot of damage in the long run. Good thing that we are able to trust the magic ingredients within each bottle! I am a huge fan of the most popular item to date, the Almond Jai Twisting Butter. It smells so good and is amazingly moisturizing!
Mielle Organics
I have nothing but good things to say about this brand. Mielle has been at the top of its game since launching in 2014. The beautiful Monique Rodriguez is the founder and CEO of this beauty and hair care line. There are currently nine collections, with best-selling products such as Babassu Oil and Mint Deep Conditioning Protein/Moisture Replenisher, Moisturizing Avocado Hair Milk, Detangling Co-Wash.
Of course there are more best-sellers, but I just wanted to offer a little preview of what’s popping over at the Mielle headquarters! I have tried the Pomegranate and Honey collection and it did not disappoint! In fact, I filmed a video styling my hair using this collection. I’ll have to show y’all one day!
Product Junkie Naturals
They knew what they were doing with the name of this brand because I sure am a product junkie. Guilty as charged! Well, I’m in recovery 😅. Product Junkie Naturals is flying under the radar in the beauty and hair care industry. It is not nearly as commercial as Mielle Organics or Camille Rose Naturals. That doesn’t stop their products from being any less bomb.
Founded by Denise Gathings, this mother of 7 and CEO of PJN needed to find a solution to hers and her family’s cosmetic needs. Product Junkie Naturals was born out of frustration – a lot of natural hair care products on the market are loaded with proteins or coconut oil. These ingredients can be troublesome for those that have low porosity hair.
Ms. Gathings sounds like she may be a lo-po gal. I can most definitely relate! Product Junkie Naturals uses Ayurvedic herbs and organic ingredients to give Afro-textured hair manageability, moisture, strength, and shine – everything our kinky tresses need to be great!! I love the Rosemary Matcha line. FYI, the product line has since updated its packaging so if anyone decides to research the brand it will not look as pictured below!
TGIN
Thank God It’s Natural! Yessss! This brand is a staple! The Founder and CEO of TGIN Chris-Tia Donaldson started this hair and skin care line because there weren’t many brands out at the time that catered to the needs of kinky, wavy, and textured hair. Back in 2002 is when she became interested in natural hair care, and Ms. Donaldson didn’t complain about the market.
She got to work by creating one of the most well-known natural hair care brands to date. TGIN can be purchased at Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, Sally’s, Walgreen’s, and of course online! I love the honey miracle mask deep conditioner, but I am itching to try the rose water line. Have any of you naturals tried it yet? I need to know lol.
Kinky-Curly
Last, but certainly not least is one of the first brands that hit the market when natural hair care began to gain traction. Shelley Davis, founder of Kinky-Curly, set the bar high with her brand that hit the shelves in 2003. Kinky-Curly became a huge success and is still a brand giant in the natural hair care industry. Products just fly right off the shelves! The best part is that they are free from harmful ingredients such as petroleum, mineral oil, parabens, alcohol and more. The Kinky-Curly Come Clean Shampoo leaves my hair and scalp squeaky clean without stripping my hair strands of its natural oils. It’s the truth!
The Takeaway
The above brands are nothing short of greatness for kinks, curls, waves, and coils. There are more black owned natural hair brands out, but I consider these the golden seven. I look forward to trying more brands, while keeping my product junkie habits in check! What are your favorite black owned hair care products? Feel free to share your thoughts with the community below!

Hello there! this is an amazing review you have got here, I’m sure the quality information in this post will be of great help to anyone who come across it as is to me. For me, I prefer Mielle Organics; I love this product! It’s lightweight, but coats my hair very well. It’s hard to find a product that I don’t have to use a lot of to keep my hair from being frizzy and flaky. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Joy!
I am so happy that you enjoyed the post! I am sure that I will be doing more reviews in the future because there are so many black owned lines to try. It’s hard not to buy them all but I’ve got to relax because the pantry is getting crazy! Lol. Searching for products are definitely trial and error, but the search is worth it in my opinion! Thanks for reading and commenting!
